Sweden will host a NATO logistics headquarters for troop movements in northern Europe in the city of Enköping, northwest of Stockholm, the government said.

“NATO’s presence in Sweden strengthens our security and deterrence. The logistics center helps defend NATO’s northern flank,” Defense Minister Pal Jonsson said.

The base will have about 70 personnel in peacetime, the government said.

“In a state of heightened alert and at the end of a war, the headquarters can be expanded to 160 people,” the government said in a statement.

The armed forces have been tasked with preparing and setting up the base so that it is operational by the end of 2027.

Jonsson told public broadcaster SVT that the work at the center “will include the transportation of various supplies, such as fuel, ammunition and spare parts.”

“The goal is to enable the transportation of large amounts of equipment and personnel across Swedish territory,” Jonsson said.

The Nordic country broke two centuries of military non-alignment after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and applied for NATO membership, becoming its 32nd member in March 2024, AFP reports.
