NATO On The Extension Of EUFOR’s Mandate In BiH: Cooperation With The EU Is Key To Stability And Security

A debate on the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) was held on Friday in the United Nations (UN) Security Council, and at the beginning of the session, the mandate of the EU-Althea mission was unanimously extended for another year.

In response to this session, NATO spokesperson Allison Hart expressed support for that decision.

“We welcome today’s decision of the UN Security Council to extend the mandate of EUFOR in BiH for another year. Close cooperation between the European Union (EU) and NATO is key to the security and stability of the Western Balkans,” Hart wrote on Friday.

It should be recalled that the extension of the EU-Althea mission is carried out annually through a vote in the UN Security Council.

This mission, namely the EUFOR troops, replaced the NATO missions SFOR and IFOR in 2004, which had come to BiH after the end of the war in 1995.

Although in the past there had been calls, primarily from Republika Srpska (RS), for this mission to be terminated, it once again received the support of all members of the UN Security Council, including Russia and China.

This mission also received support during the speeches of the representatives of the member countries of the Security Council.
