Nearly two-thirds of Democrats want Biden to withdraw his Candidacy

Almost two-thirds of Democrats in the United States of America (USA) believe that President Joseph Biden should withdraw from the presidential race and allow his party to nominate another candidate, according to polls in that country.

That significantly undermined Biden’s post-debate claim that “average Democrats” are still with him, even if the “big names” are turning against him.

A new poll by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that only about three in 10 Democrats are extremely or very confident that Biden has the mental ability to effectively serve as president, a slight drop from 40 percent in the AP-NORC- and in February.

The results underscore the challenges the 81-year-old president faces as he tries to silence calls from within his own party to drop out of the race and tries to convince Democrats that he is the best candidate to defeat Donald Trump.

The poll was conducted before Saturday’s assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. It is not clear whether the shooting has affected people’s views of Biden, but a small number of poll interviews conducted after the shooting did not provide early indications that his prospects have improved, AA writes.

According to the results of the poll, seven out of ten Americans think that Biden should step down.

“I’m genuinely concerned about his ability to hold office. I honestly think he’s too old for the job,” said Democrat Andrew Holcomb of Denver.

Many lawmakers have expressed discomfort with the continuation of Biden’s campaign, while others have strongly supported the incumbent’s plans.

A total of 11 members of the Democratic Party who hold mandates in Congress publicly called on Biden to drop out of the election campaign.

Among them is Vermont Senator Peter Welch, who called on Biden to step down “for the good of the country.”

House of Representatives member Hillary Scholten said that, for the sake of American democracy, she believes it is time for Biden to withdraw from the election race and allow a new leader to take over the candidacy.

“Joseph Biden is a patriot, but he’s no longer the best candidate to beat Trump,” said a member of the House of Representatives,Pat Ryan, who won the elections of the New York district in 2019 and took it from the Republicans.

Mikie Sherrill, also from the House of Representatives, said that she knows that Biden cares about the future of America and that is why she is asking him “to declare that he will not run for re-election” and that he will help the Democratic Party in choosing a new candidate.
