New Status Conference in the Proceedings against Ratko Mladic soon?

The Appeals Chamber of the UNITED NATIONS International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals has scheduled a new status conference in the proceedings against the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) Ratko Mladic on February 18th, this year.

The last status conference took place in November last year, when Mladic complained about the state of health, BIRN reports. Prisca Nyambe, a jurist from Zambia,  will chair the statutory conference, who was set up in the Appellate Panel following the decision of Judge Jean-Claude Antonetti, on the request of the Defense, to dismiss the chairman Theodor Meron and members of Carmel Agius and Liu Daqun for “being biased”.

Mladic was found guilty by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia for the Srebrenica genocide, the persecution of Bosniaks and Croats throughout BiH, the terrorism of the population of Sarajevo and the taking of UNPROFOR members for hostages. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Mladic made an appeal against the verdict, but the Hague Prosecution did it as well, demanding that he be found guilty of genocide in six more municipalities.

The date of pronouncement of the final verdict has not yet been determined.
