Although it was expected that the footage from the surveillance camera from the tram from last week’s accident in Sarajevo would be one of the most important pieces of evidence in solving the case, the investigation determined that the footage from the tram does not exist, as the camera has not been working since November.

After the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo rejected the proposal of the Sarajevo Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office to order one month of pre-trial detention for the tram driver, the acting prosecutors, respecting the court’s position, which established that there is reasonable suspicion that the driver committed the criminal offense of endangering public traffic through negligence resulting in death, have continued to intensify investigative activities in the tram accident case. The case is being handled by a team of prosecutors from the Department for General and Economic Crime and Corruption.

The investigation is proceeding in several directions, with particular emphasis on the technical condition of the tram.

So far, 30 witnesses have been interviewed and 10 surveillance recordings have been obtained from surrounding facilities, including footage from BH Telecom, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a Technical School, as well as video from inside the tram cabin. All of the footage is currently undergoing forensic analysis. Extensive documentation has also been seized from the Ministry of Transport of the Sarajevo Canton, relating to the reconstruction of the entire tram line and signal plans for all relevant intersections, which will be subject to expert examination.

Evidence is being collected for comprehensive expert assessments in the fields of mechanical engineering, traffic engineering, and electrical engineering.

The pace of work on the case will depend on the speed of action by police investigators, expert witnesses, other law enforcement agencies, and the issuance of orders by the competent court required for investigative actions on site, the Sarajevo Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office stated.
