Noam Chomsky’s wife, Valeria Wasserman Chomsky, has denied reports from two days ago that the renowned linguist and activist has passed away.
“No, it is false,” she wrote.
Noam Chomsky (95) had been hospitalized in Brazil while recovering from a stroke he suffered a year ago, Valeria Chomsky stated last week. However, the Beneficencia Portuguesa Hospital in Sao Paulo released a statement indicating that Chomsky was discharged on Tuesday to continue his treatment at home.
Chomsky was also a trending topic on the social media X due to numerous false reports of his death. Jacobin and The New Statesman published obituaries for Chomsky, although the former changed the headline from “Remembering Noam Chomsky” to “Let’s Celebrate Noam Chomsky.”
The New Statesman completely retracted its essay by former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis. Brazilian news site Diario do Centro do Mundo also issued a story announcing Chomsky’s death, only to later publish a correction.
The Chomsky couple has resided in Brazil since 2015. Noam Chomsky, known to millions for his critiques of United States (U.S.) foreign policy, taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for decades. In 2017, he joined the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
