The Draft Law on the investigation of the origin of property, which was suggested by Deputy Vukota Govedarica of the Serbian Democratic Party (SDS) was adopted yesterday almost unanimously by the National Assembly of RS. There were heated debates surrounding this law.

During voting, only one Deputy abstained, while 70 supported the adoption of the law, which caused contention between SNSD and SDS.

SDS said that the aim of proposing this law was to show whether there is political will to adopt this type of law in the RS, while SNSD claimed that the law is not enforceable. However, they gave their support in the end.

After a stormy two-day debate over this law, the stances of SNSD and SDS did not change. Expert discussions will commence and last for 60 days, while the motion for a public hearing has been denied.

The draft law on investigating the origin of property refers to property acquired after 1 April 1992, from when the law on investigation of property could no longer apply, and which existed in the former Yugoslavia and relates to the property census of 500,000 KM on the date of the acquisition of property.

The law on investigating the origin of property in the RS refers primarily to officials and all political office holders, regardless of their level, and who entered into their function from 1 January 1992. This includes all officials who are now citizens of the RS.

The Deputies yesterday supported the Law on Organic Production, of amending the Law on Transport and Roads RS, and the draft legislation of the development of small and medium enterprises, products of animal origin, a set of laws concerning the operation and development investment funds bank of the RS, and the draft law on amendments to the criminal code.
