Official site of FC Manchester City has examined the prospects of Edin Džeko ahead of Brazil 2014

džekoThe official site of Manchester City football club has examined the prospects of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Edin Džeko ahead of Brazil 2014.

Known as the Bosnian Diamond in his homeland, Edin Džeko exploded onto the international scene with a volleyed goal on his senior debut against Turkey in 2007.

Although his country’s World Cup qualification journey in 2010 ended with heartbreak and defeat to Portugal in the playoffs, Edin netted nine times in qualifying and finished joint second highest scorer in the European section.

Now on target to go one better, he currently sits top of the goalscoring charts in the 2014 UEFA qualifying section with eight strikes in six matches – and he’s notched five assists.

The City striker also scooped the Bosnian Player of the Year award in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Not considered a traditional footballing powerhouse, Bosnia and Herzegovina are on track to reach their first ever World Cup finals as an independent nation.

Top of Group G by three points, they are bolstered by a significantly larger goal difference than nearest challengers Greece – aided significantly by Džeko himself.

Barring injury, Edin will be the first one boarding the plane and expecting to play every match on his country’s World Cup menu.

Forming a deadly partnership up front with Vedad Ibišević, Džeko has played the full complement of his country’s World Cup qualifiers.

Edin’s first international hattrick in an 8-1 drubbing of Liechtenstein last September saw him overtake Elvir Bolić to become his country’s top scorer in history – not a bad night then!

His tally now stands at 29 – and aged 27, Edin will hopefully have many more years to add to his total.
