On This Day 46 Years Ago: Bosnia Crowned European Basketball Champions

46 years ago, the basketball club Bosna became the European champion, after defeating the Italian Emerson Varese in the grand final.

On April 5, 1979, the “Students” became the first club from the former Yugoslavia to win the title of champion of the old continent. For Varese, it was the tenth consecutive final in the Champions Cup, while Bosna participated for the first time.

The greatest success in the history of Bosnian basketball was achieved then by: Delibasic, Varajic, Vucevic, Benaceek, Djogic, Bosiocic, Izic, Radovanovic, Hadzic, Pesic, while Tanjevic led the team from the bench.

In that match, Žarko Varajic scored an incredible 45 points and set a record in the finals of the Champions Cup and Euroleague, and Mirza Delibasic added 30 points.

The European champions were welcomed in Sarajevo a day later by around 15,000 fans.
