The Spanish prosecutor is seeking a nine-year prison sentence for former Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves, who is expected to stand trial for allegedly raping a young woman in a nightclub in Barcelona last year.
The State Prosecutor’s Office is also seeking compensation of 150,000 euros.
Alves, who has been in prison since his arrest on January 20, allegedly violently assaulted and raped a woman in the bathroom of a VIP area of a Barcelona nightclub in the early morning of December 31. An investigating judge indicted him in August, and the court announced this month that there was enough evidence to start a trial. A hearing date has not been set.
Spanish media reports that Alves changed his testimony several times during the trial.
In his first statement to the police, he said that he had never met the girl, then he admitted that he met her and offered her a drink, but that there was no physical contact between them. In the third statement, he stated that there was physical contact, but that he only touched her with his hands. He then confessed to the sexual act, but with the consent of the girl.
All of his bail applications have been turned down due to his flight risk, despite him offering to surrender his passport and wear a tracking device while awaiting a court decision.
After Lionel Messi, Alves is the most decorated footballer in history with a total of 43 trophies at the senior level, including three Champions League titles with Barcelona and two Copa America titles with Brazil. He made 126 appearances for the Brazilian national team and scored eight goals, N1 reports.
