Parliamentary Group for the Protection of Heritage: Herzegovina needs to make better Use of its Potential

A delegation of the multi-party parliamentary group for the protection of the cultural, historical, and natural heritage of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) visited Capljina and Mostar.

The group of deputies Amer Obradovic, Nasiha Pozder, and Lana Prlic, who is supported by the International Republican Institute (IRI), met with local and cantonal officials in Capljina and Mostar to discuss activities, challenges, promotion, and using heritage for the benefit of the development of local communities as well as the whole society.

“In Capljina, the group met with Mayor Smiljan Vidic, as well as representatives of local authorities, NGOs, the Tourist Board, and representatives of the creative industry. It was emphasized at the meeting that local communities need greater support from higher levels to adequately protect and manage cultural, historical, and natural heritage in a more efficient way, ” they pointed out.

Also, the gathered participants in the meeting gave their support to the multi-party Group for referral to the parliamentary procedure of amendments to the Law on Implementation of Decisions of the Commission to Preserve National Monuments in the FBiH.

“Local communities must be adequately protected from foreign tourist guides and groups that use the natural, cultural, and historical resources of BiH, while local communities do not benefit from this. There are many issues with public calls of institutions and ministries, so introducing digital applications in the wake of European best practices is something that the representatives of the Group will seek through their parliamentary engagement, through parliamentary initiatives, ” it was stated.

After visiting Capljina, deputies Lana Prlic, Nasiha Pozder, and Amer Obradovic spoke with the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (HNC), Rasid Hadzovic.

The HNC is extremely rich when it comes to cultural, historical, and natural heritage, and putting into function the potential that this area has is something that all levels of government should work on together. Also, the parliamentarians used their visit to Herzegovina to visit national monuments.
