The University Clinical Center in Tuzla continued to perform cadaver transplants, and a multidisciplinary team performed the so-called transplant of two kidneys from a brain-dead patient. The organs were transplanted to patients from Sarajevo, who have a new chance for a quality life.

Namely, the doctors of the Tuzla University Clinical Center performed the explantation of the organs in the Cantonal Hospital in Zenica, after which the kidneys were transported by ambulance to the health facility in Tuzla.

“Due to the quick reaction of the entire transplant team of the Tuzla University Clinical Center, the health staff of the Zenica Cantonal Hospital, and the humanity of the donor’s family, as well as a large number of non-medical staff, the explantation of organs was performed, which was followed by the transplantation of two kidneys, which was performed at the Tuzla University Clinical Center,” said the director of the University Clinical Center in Tuzla, Denijal Tulumovic.

The cadaveric organ donation and successful transplantation continued the development of this project at the Tuzla University Clinical Center and created the possibility to save and improve the quality of life of patients in this way.

Along with the multidisciplinary team of doctors for explantation and transplantation and the expert teams of the Polyclinic for Transfusion, the Polyclinic for Laboratory Diagnostics, the Hospital Pharmacy, the Department of Nephrology, Hemodialysis, and Transplantation and the Department for Technical Affairs, they made a great contribution to the performance of these transplants.

The members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Tuzla Canton (TC) also had great significance in this story, who contributed to the fast and safe transport of the organs with their official escort and rotating vehicles, which did not stop on the roads from Zenica to Tuzla, which is extremely important in such cases.

It should be recalled that at the beginning of May, after a year and a half, the performance of cadaveric transplants was re-established in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). In the simplest terms, it is the removal of organs from a patient who has been declared brain dead.

In this case, too, the organ was removed at the Cantonal Hospital in Zenica, and the transplant was performed at the University Clinical Center in Tuzla. Then, explantation and transplantation of one kidney and cornea were performed, Klix.ba reports.
