The Government of Canton Sarajevo (CS) has adopted an updated Plan of Intervention Measures in Cases of Excessive Air Pollution in the Canton.

The adoption of the Intervention Plan is a legal obligation, and it is applied in cases when the permitted values of pollutants in the air that may adversely affect the health of the population have been exceeded.

Based on constant analysis and evaluation of the effectiveness of measures, as well as the results of research conducted with professional institutions, the Ministry of Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of CS continuously proposes innovating the Plan to make measures as effectively as possible. The gained experiences as well as the practices of other European cities that face a similar problem are used in the implementation uses.

According to the Ministry, the goal is to strengthen the responsibility of all entities in charge of implementing the Plan, but also to improve collective awareness of the importance of respecting measures in the interest of protecting the health of the population. In addition, the situation regarding the adoption of regulations in this area is continuously monitored.

Thus, the new Rulebook on technical inspections of vehicles, based on the Law on Fundamentals of Road Traffic Safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), enabled more complete regulation of obligations to check vehicle exhaust gases and the work of technical inspection stations, and the actions of bodies responsible for traffic and internal affairs.

One of the innovative measures specifies the ban on the incineration of waste and other non-vegetative material in open space and in facilities that are not intended for waste incineration.

It is determined, among other things, that it is punishable to dispose of hot ashes in containers for municipal waste, which will be the subject of increased supervision of municipal wardens.

”The new plan excludes the possibility of introducing an even-odd driving system in the “Alert” episode, due to implementation difficulties, ” it was said by the Protocol and Press Service of the CS.
