The deadliest plane crash of the year occurred in Brazil.
A Voepass Airlines ATR-72 passenger plane flying from Cascavel to Guarulhos crashed on August 9th into a residential area in the city of Vinhedo, in the northern part of Sao Paulo state.
The crash claimed the lives of 62 people, including 58 passengers and four crew members. The identification process was challenging as the plane caught fire after hitting the ground.
Ten passengers who missed the flight survived the tragedy.
Another incident occurred earlier in the year, on January 2nd, on the runway of Haneda Airport in Tokyo, where a passenger plane and a Coast Guard aircraft collided.
Following the collision, both planes caught fire on the runway.
While 379 passengers and crew members of the passenger plane were safely evacuated, five of the six people aboard the Coast Guard aircraft died, and the pilot was injured.
Local media, citing sources from Japan’s Ministry of Transport, confirmed that the Haneda Airport control tower allowed the passenger plane involved in the accident to land and instructed the Coast Guard aircraft to stay clear of the runway temporarily.
The pilot of the Coast Guard aircraft, who survived, claimed during the investigation that he had received clearance to land.
Another crash occurred on January 5th in the United States (U.S.).
An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 made an emergency landing on the evening of January 5th after a section of its fuselage detached mid-air.
The plane, traveling from Oregon to California, was forced to land approximately 35 minutes after takeoff. Reports indicated that there were no passengers in the section where the fuselage detached.
Alaska Airlines announced that the plane landed safely with 171 passengers and six crew members on board.
In Nepal, on July 24th, 18 people were killed when a plane crashed during takeoff.
The aircraft, carrying 19 people, skidded off the runway and crashed during takeoff at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.
The bodies of 18 individuals aboard the Saurya Airlines plane were recovered, while the pilot survived with injuries.
On January 24th, Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported that a Russian plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners was struck by a missile launched by Ukraine in the Belgorod region.
The aircraft, carrying 74 individuals – including a six-member crew, 65 Ukrainian soldiers captured during the conflict, and three Russian military personnel escorting them – had no survivors.
Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Ukraine had shot down the plane using a U.S. “Patriot“ air defense system, calling it a “crime.“
On March 12th, an IL-76 military transport plane carrying 15 people crashed in Russia’s Ivanovo region.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced at the time that the military transport plane crashed due to an engine fire.
The crash claimed the lives of eight crew members and seven passengers aboard the aircraft.
A Sukhoi Superjet 100-passenger plane crashed on July 12th in Russia during a flight from Tretyakovo Airport to Vnukovo Airport, killing three crew members.
A potential cause of the crash is believed to be a malfunction in sensors installed during maintenance.
