Following the passing of former President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Liamine Zeroual, the Presidency of the Republic has declared a three-day national mourning period across the entire national territory, as well as within Algerian diplomatic missions abroad. Flags are to be flown at half-mast in tribute to the deceased.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune visited the Mohamed Seghir Nekkache Military Hospital in Algiers to pay his respects and extend condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased. In his capacity as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, he also travelled to Batna, where he oversaw the official funeral ceremonies.

A solemn and dignified funeral was held in Batna, attended by thousands of citizens who gathered to pay their final respects to the former Head of State. During the ceremony, President Tebboune presented the national flag to the son of the deceased following the burial, as a final gesture of respect.

In Sarajevo, the Embassy of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria announced with profound sorrow the passing of the former Head of State. A book of condolences has been opened at the Embassy premises from 31 March to 3 April 2026, between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

On behalf of all Embassy staff, the Ambassador of Algeria to Bosnia and Herzegovina, His Excellency Mr. Mohammed Meraimi, expressed his deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased as well as to the Algerian people, praying for mercy and eternal peace for the late President.
