Susan Holt, Premier of the Canadian province of New Brunswick, has officially issued a proclamation marking the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, aligning the province with national and international efforts to commemorate the 1995 atrocity.
In her proclamation, Premier Holt cited key international and Canadian recognitions of the genocide, including judgments by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), both of which classified the massacre of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica as genocide.
She also referenced the 2010 Resolution M-416 adopted by the Parliament of Canada, which declared July 11 as the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide in Canada. Further mentions included the Canadian Museum for Human Rights’ permanent exhibition on the Srebrenica genocide, Canada’s legal measures criminalizing genocide denial, and the historic 2024 resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, which designated July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.
This marks the seventh such proclamation issued in Canada this year in commemoration of the genocide. The central Canadian commemoration will take place on July 5 in Windsor, Ontario, in front of the first monument dedicated to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide in the diaspora.
The Genocide Research Institute of Canada expressed its gratitude to Premier Holt, emphasizing the significance of this gesture in the ongoing fight against genocide denial and historical revisionism.

WHEREAS, in 1995, more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were killed in Srebrenica by the army, paramilitaries, and police forces of Republika Srpska. The ICTY and the ICJ ruled the massacre an act of genocide, and it is featured in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights;
WHEREAS, in 2010, Canada’s House of Commons passed Resolution M-416 recognizing the genocide and establishing a national day of remembrance;
WHEREAS, in 2024, the UN General Assembly declared July 11 as the International Day of Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide;
THEREFORE, I, Susan Holt, Premier of New Brunswick, do hereby proclaim July 11, 2025:
“Srebrenica Remembrance Day” in the province of New Brunswick.
This proclamation underscores Canada’s continued commitment to remembrance, truth, and justice for the victims of genocide.
