Prevot after Visiting Srebrenica: “I cannot stress enough how important it is to reject the Denial of War Crimes”

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot spoke out after visiting the Srebrenica Memorial Center and said that he cannot emphasize enough how important remembrance, support for international justice and the rejection of any form of denial or glorification of war crimes are.

“My mission to the Western Balkans ended with a visit that reminds us that stability and security in the Balkans are essential: Srebrenica, unfortunately known for the genocide that took place there in 1995. I cannot emphasize enough how important remembrance, support for international justice and the rejection of any form of denial or glorification of war crimes are,” Prevot said.

He stressed that diplomacy is not just a matter of institutions and agreements; it is also a matter of humanity.

“Recognizing suffering, listening to communities and recognizing the dignity of every identity are key steps towards rebuilding trust. In a region where memories are still alive and identities are often politicized, continuing to connect people and perspectives is essential for reconciliation,” the Belgian Foreign Minister stressed.

He said that supporting regional stability in the Western Balkans is not just a strategic priority; it is a shared responsibility to ensure that peace, coexistence and mutual understanding remain the foundations on which the region can continue to develop.

“To conclude my mission, let me reiterate: the Western Balkans deserve our attention and support. Let us work together to ensure that their European integration succeeds, for the good of the future of our continent,” Prevot concluded.
