Four men with baseball bats who came out of the premises of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) attacked a group of students in Novi Sad early Tuesday morning, among whom one girl received serious and several minor injuries, reported regional media in Serbia, citing to the communication of the students.
“One girl was seriously injured. “She is currently in the Clinical Center of Vojvodina, her jaw is dislocated and she has injuries all over her body, and there are several other students with minor physical injuries,” the press release states.
The students stated that four men with baseball bats chased a group of students who were pasting stickers and drawing graffiti “Three months, three bridges”.
The attack happened when a student of the Faculty of Medicine pasted a sticker on a trash can in front of the SNS premises, which was an invitation to a protest on February 1 in Novi Sad.
Then two men of strong build came out of the premises of SNS and attacked the young man, Hina reports.
“They caught him in a clinch and started choking him. The girl managed to record it with her phone, after which they confiscated her phone and deleted the recording,” the students’ press release states.
The attacked students managed to escape, but the attackers, after quickly going to the premises of SNS, returned and started chasing them, first on foot, then with a car when they almost hit two of their colleagues, the students’ press release describes.
According to their statements, the same two men along with two others with baseball bats attacked another group of students.
On that occasion, they inflicted serious physical injuries on a female student, kicked her and hit her with sticks.
The other students who were attacked managed to escape with minor injuries, they claim.
“We strongly condemn this attack and are appalled by the state of our society in which such a situation is even possible. We demand that the persons responsible for the attack on the students be identified as soon as possible and that they be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the students said in a press release.
“We appeal to all competent institutions to get involved as soon as possible and start doing their work. We have had enough of blood!”, concluded the announcement of the student activists.
Students in Serbia, joined more and more by citizens, have been publicly protesting for three months, demanding responsibility for the death of 15 people near the Novi Sad railway station on November 1 last year.
