The aircraft arrived from Italy, and moments later, the sky above Mostar filled with paratroopers. Elsewhere across Bosnia and Herzegovina, a different picture was unfolding: helicopters were landing, convoys were crossing the border, forces were arriving by air, land and sea, while EUFOR personnel were training to respond to situations that demand speed, coordination and determination.
This was Quick Response 2026, EUFOR’s annual exercise, which demonstrated what it means to be ready to act quickly and at the right moment. From Sarajevo, Mostar and Čapljina to Bijeljina, Tuzla and the Banja Luka training area, the exercise connected different locations and different capabilities into one coordinated effort. The focus was not only on soldiers and equipment, but above all on the ability to make decisions, establish coordination and respond effectively in a complex situation.
A key element of the exercise was the rapid deployment of reserve forces. Personnel from several European countries arrived in Bosnia and Herzegovina by different routes, including aircraft, helicopter, ship and road convoy. Their arrival was more than a logistical activity; it was a practical demonstration of EUFOR’s ability to rapidly increase its capabilities on the ground when required.
In Sarajevo, personnel practised the evacuation of staff from the Embassy of Greece, including activities both inside and outside the embassy. At other locations, security, evacuation and escort operations were practised. In Čapljina, the scenario focused on the evacuation of a Liaison and Observation Team House, testing the ability of personnel to respond quickly and operate in a coordinated manner.
In Bijeljina, the sky once again became part of the exercise. Paratroopers jumped from a helicopter, while other locations hosted activities requiring the involvement of different components and capabilities. Each location presented a different scenario, but the objective remained the same: to test readiness and the ability to operate together.
The exercise culminated in Mostar, where participants once again demonstrated how speed, precision and coordination can be critical when responding to a crisis. The deployment of paratroopers by helicopter was one of the most striking moments of the finale, but behind the spectacular scenes was a much more important purpose: to demonstrate that the ability to respond rapidly is not simply a plan on paper, but a capability that must be trained and tested. Quick Response 2026 brought together personnel from 24 countries and connected EUFOR with partner institutions through a series of scenarios requiring teamwork, communication and trust.
Because when a crisis occurs, there is no time to learn. There is no time to look for answers. You rely on what you have already trained to do. That is why Quick Response 2026 was more than a demonstration of military capability. It was a test of readiness, coordination and mutual trust, and a reminder that security depends on the ability to act quickly, responsibly and together.
The exercise is over, but its message remains clear: Readiness is not demonstrated through words. Readiness is demonstrated through action.
