Fan group Ultra Dey Boys, who support the Algerian football club NA Hussein Dey, sent a sharp and witty message during their team’s first game of the season at the Dar El Beïda Stadium in Algeria.
A slogan appeared in the stands with a clear linguistic play on the name of the convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić: “RAT-KO” (English war – rat/rat), with which the Algerian fans pointed to his fate and the end of his life behind bars, with the message that “the rat is dead and enjoying hell”.
Ratko Mladić, who was the commander-in-chief of the Army of the Republika Srpska, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Court of Justice in The Hague for the genocide in Srebrenica in July 1995, where more than 8,000 unarmed men, boys and old men were killed, and for numerous war crimes, crimes against humanity and systematic rape.
The move by the Algerian ultras came as a direct response to the events in the Serbian stadiums, where individual fan groups raised banners and choreographed dances glorifying Mladic.
The fact that groups associated with clubs with historical rivalry, such as Partizan and Crvena zvezda, briefly suppressed their bigotry in order to jointly send messages of support and glorification of the convicted war criminal attracted particular attention, Klix.ba writes.
