With the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is becoming dramatically more complicated. Day by day, there are increasing crowds on testing, and the number of new cases is drastically increasing.
Thus, a new record of the number of newly infected was set on Friday, as many as 3.162 out of 6.719 processed tests. Also, there is increasing pressure on the hospital system.
The galloping growth of the number of newly infected and the increasingly difficult epidemiological situation do not surprise experts.
”The Christmas holidays, the New Year, all this is reflected like a boomerang. Our people are not disciplined, hygienic and epidemiological measures are not respected, the percentage of vaccination is low, all this has contributed to the rapid spread of the virus, ” told prof. dr. Jasenko Karamehic, a prominentimmunologist.
He pointed out that the measures must be more rigorous sinceappeals and requests do not yield results.
”Our hospital system will not be able to withstand this, it will capitulate, it will collapse. Vaccination has done its job, narrowing the maneuver space for the virus, which must mutate in order to survive. When it mutates, it has delta-like forms and the current omicron, which has a milder clinical picture and which it compensates for with greater prevalence.
But, with a large number of cases, there is an increase in the number of those with the moderate and severe clinical picture. These are big numbers and that is what can suffocate the hospital system, not only ours but also others, ” warned prof. dr. Karamehic.
