Refugees from Ukraine have arrived in Medjugorje

Refugees from war-torn Ukraine in Medjugorje were visited yesterday by representatives of the Red Cross of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) and the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (HNC) and are preparing with volunteers for the arrival of another 50 women and children fleeing the war to Medjugorje, where they were expected last night.

HNC Red Cross Secretary Bojan Rosic stated that 26 refugees are currently registered in Medjugorje and that the number will certainly be higher because those who came as pilgrims earlier, now arrive on their own, knowing that the door is open to them in Medjugorje.

“In one boarding house, there are 18 refugees from Ukraine, of which 11 are children and 7 women, and subsequently eight more women and children arrived who are also accommodated in the boarding house,” Rosic told.

Further, he emphasized that the owners of the boarding house have created comfortable living conditions for them, but since a new wave of refugees is expected in that place and it is uncertain how long they will stay, they need help, which is why volunteers from Red Cross Citluk are coordinating with the cantonal and federal and work tirelessly to provide assistance.

He noted yesterday that 32 children and 18 women who have been traveling on the run from the war for three days were expected to arrive last night and that the owners of two facilities have made their boarding houses available for them.

In order to better respond to the current situation, a coordination meeting was held between federal, cantonal, and municipal representatives of the Red Cross, at which activities were agreed for the coming period.

Refugees from Ukraine arriving in Medjugorje fleeing the war have been provided with psychosocial support and Covid-19 testing before boarding, for which they have already provided antigen tests to prevent the potential spread of coronavirus infection.

To recall, the humanitarian number 17023 is also active, through which citizens can donate 2 BAM to help the endangered population of Ukraine.
