Residents of Sarajevo surprised by the Snow

After the air quality during the first part of yesterday was seriously damaged in the central and north-eastern densely populated basins and valleys of Bosnia, today, due to intense precipitation and slightly stronger wind, there was a decrease in the concentration of pollutants in the air.

The air quality was unhealthy yesterday, especially in the area of the capital of BiH and Ilijaš and Visoko primarily due to high concentrations of floating particles PM10 /PM2.5, and in some places also due to high concentrations of sulfur dioxide.

Today, the situation in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding air quality has improved significantly.

In most areas, the air quality is good – especially in the area of Ivan-sedlo and Livno and Mostar, where the air quality index at 10:00 a.m. was 4 and 8, respectively, then in the area of Jajce and Tešanj, where the air quality was 25 and 35, and 42 as far as what was measured in Tuzla, the data is provided by Ekoakcija, which collects and publishes data on air quality.

Data on air quality in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina are collected from official measuring stations, and part of these stations are under the jurisdiction of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Institute of Public Health of the Sarajevo Canton, and part under the responsibility of the Tuzla Canton and the American Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Moderate air pollution was registered this morning in the area of Bihać and Vogošća, where the air quality index was 55 and 60, then in the area of Banja Luka, where the air quality index was 65, Visoko, where the air quality index was 74, and Sarajevo and Zenica, where the air quality index was 95 and 98.

In conditions of moderate air pollution, it is warned that some pollutants can cause health problems for people who are very sensitive to air pollution. Such persons should avoid being outside and reduce strain while being outside.

The air quality index is based on the measurement of particles (PM2.5 and PM10), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.

So, for example, yesterday at 09:00 a.m. the measured amount of these particles in the capital of BiH was 179 μg/m3 and the air was very unhealthy for the population due to such a concentration of these particles, while this morning at 10:00 a.m. the concentration of these particles was 40 μg/m3 and the air is moderately polluted .
