Laying flowers and paying tribute today marked 34 years since the murder of eight citizens of Sarajevo in Halači street at number 5, in Baščaršija, during the siege of the city.
On August 23, 1992, a mortar shell fired from a position of the Army of Republika Srpska hit citizens waiting in line for water at that location.
On that occasion, Dženan Aljević, Mahir Ferhatović, Tarik Harba, Esma Muratović, Meliha Muratović-Spahić, Almasa Spahić, Mahira Spahić and Ismet Suljić were killed. Two people were seriously injured, and four were slightly injured.
Family members and friends of the murdered, representatives of the Association of Parents of Murdered Children of the Siege of Sarajevo in 1992-1995 gathered in front of the memorial today. and the delegations of Sarajevo Canton and the City of Sarajevo.
The Minister of Finance of the Sarajevo Canton, Afan Kalamujić, said that by marking the anniversary, the memory of not only the victims of that crime is preserved, but also of all those killed during the siege of Sarajevo and the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“We are talking about them because it is extremely important, not only for the past and present, but especially for the future,” said Kalamujić.
He emphasized that Sarajevo remembers its victims and that it is society’s duty to persevere in truth and justice.
“Justice is our debt to the victims. International courts convicted only a small number of those responsible for the crimes in Sarajevo, but justice is not only about punishments, justice is about recognizing the truth and fighting against denial,” said Kalamujić.
It was ordered that places of remembrance should not only be a reminder of the suffering, but also a warning that such crimes should never be repeated to anyone, the KS Protocol and Public Relations Service announced.
