Historical Moment: Resolution on Srebrenica adopted in the United Nations

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) voted on the Resolution declaring July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica.

84 countries voted FOR, 68 abstained while 19 were against.

With this act, the General Assembly of the United Nations made a historic decision that will primarily be of great importance to all the families of the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.

As a reminder, the most important parts of the resolution are contained in seven points, namely:

The General Assembly makes a decision to declare July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide of 1995 in Srebrenica.

It unreservedly condemns any denial of the genocide in Srebrenica and calls on the member states to preserve the established facts, including through educational systems by developing appropriate programs, also with the aim of remembering, preventing denial and distortion of the genocide.

Unreservedly condemns actions that glorify convicted war crimes, crimes against humanity, including those responsible for the genocide in Srebrenica.

It emphasizes the importance of completing the process of finding and identifying the remaining victims of the genocide in Srebrenica and calls for the continuation of the criminal prosecution of those perpetrators of genocide who have yet to face justice.

It calls on all states to fully comply with their obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Requests the Secretary General to establish an information program entitled “Genocide in Srebrenica and the UN”, thus starting its activities to mark the 30th anniversary of the genocide It invites all member states, organizations of the UN system, NGOs and academic organizations to mark the International Day, including the organization of special activities in memory and honoring the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica in 1995, as well as appropriate education and activities related to raising public awareness. about genocide.

Let us recall that the initiative to adopt the Resolution on Srebrenica was initiated by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany and Rwanda. In the meantime, as a result of significant diplomatic activity, the countries were joined by numerous partners, including Albania, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy , Jordan, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Poland, Rwanda, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, Great Britain and the United States of America, Klix.ba writes.
