Russian Diplomat lobbies against the Resolution on Srebrenica, believing it could cause an Explosion in the Balkans

Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations (UN), Vasily Nebenzya, commented on the situation in the Balkans, blaming the West for recent events and tensions.

In an interview with Serbian media, Nebenzya addressed a range of topics, including the announced debate on the resolution on Srebrenica, scheduled for May 2nd at the UN General Assembly.

“Lobbying for a UN General Assembly resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica is another example of the West’s attempt to exploit the difficult past and the feelings of Bosnian Muslims to exert pressure and subjugate Bosnian Serbs, and alongside them, everyone else. The West does not consider this issue a matter of history and actively promotes it. We understand the complexity of the conflict period in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), which is why we consider this initiative destructive and capable of causing an explosion in the Balkans. We are working with other delegations to explain the situation and convey our concerns,” Nebenzya said.

He particularly criticized Germany’s position as one of the co-sponsors of the resolution.

“Germany has historically tried to play a special role in the Balkans. For some reason, it believes it deserves more than others. An example of this is the activity of the German Christian Schmidt, the High Representative in BiH. He implements German interests in the country. Co-sponsoring the Draft Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica, as well as Berlin’s active role in its promotion, indicates Germany’s intention to consolidate itself in Europe as an independent center of power. Therefore, it has decided to play the ‘Balkan card.’ Germany’s example shows us that when it comes to selfish interests, any methods can be applied – even immoral ones, such as the misuse of the historical drama of the people of BiH,” the Russian representative concluded, as reported by Serbian media, Klix.ba reports.
