courtBrkić was found guilty for fighting in the war in Syria between the 13th of May 2013 and March 5th 2014.

Judge Nenad Šeleda said that the Trial Chamber believed the testimony of prosecution witnesses who testified that they saw Brkić in Syria.

Šeleda said that Brkić got a minimum sentence of three years in prison because he behaved well during the trial, and voluntarily returned from Syria.

The fact that Brkić had prior convictions was considered as an aggravating circumstance.

“The Court believes that the punishment will hold back Brkić, and other people from committing criminal offenses by going to Syria,” said the judge.

Given that Brkić is unemployed and indigent, he did not have to cover the costs of the proceedings. The verdict can be appealed.
