Sarajevo Bridge in Barcelona to be Covered with Concrete that Shines in the Dark and ‘Eats’ Smog

Sarajevo Bridge 3 radiosarajevo.baSarajevo Bridge in Barcelona will soon receive a large green reconstruction, crowned with concrete that shines in the dark and eats smog, green walls full of lush vegetation, as well as LED illumination.

The reconstruction of the infrastructure was designed by the Spanish Architecture Bureau BCQ and is part of the plan of Barcelona city authorities to transform the bridge into an attractive new gateway to the city. The energy self-sufficient bridge will also have the role of a town square, with new, shaded seating areas.

The Sarajevo Bridge is the northernmost piece of infrastructure that extends beyond Avinguda Meridian, the south highway that leads the traffic to the capital of Catalonia. The striking location of the elevated bridge has motivated the city council to transform the structure into an environmentally friendly green threshold in Barcelona. The renovated bridge will improve the air quality and serve as a pedestrian meeting place between the two villages.

Sarajevo Bridge 1 radiosarajevo.baThe project of the BCQ Bureau will bring a dramatic change to the Sarajevo bridge, which is currently a tedious and unprotected transition devoid of greenery and will coat the structure with green walls and pergolas. The pavement of the bridge will be replaced with the photocatalytic concrete, a self-cleaning material that oxidizes pollutants and purifies the air.

To make the most self-sufficient example of infrastructure, the Architectural Bureau BCQ lit the bridge up with LED lights and photo-luminescent elements embedded to concrete.
