johnnOn 12 April, fans of one of the most famous ex-yu bands ‘Azra’ will mark the 60th birthday of band’s front man Branimir Johnny Štulić, said to Fena, manager of publishing house ‘Sarajevodisk’ Nebojša Kovač.

He noted that Azra Tribute Band will have a live tribute concert and they will play the greatest hits of ‘Azra’ and Štulić and entertain the fans of ‘Azra’.

‘Visitors will have a unique opportunity to participate, by paying a symbolic entrance fee’ in a birthday present to Johnny which will be given via mutual friends. The concert will start at 9 p.m.’, said Kovač.

Controversial and one of the greatest mystics of former Yugoslavia rock scene was born on 11 April 1953 in Skoplje. His father was a military personal of JNA and soon he moved to Zagreb where he grew up and studied at the Faculty of Philosophy and in the beginning of his career he usually performed solo.

First band he formed was called ‘Balkan Sevdah Bend’ and so the name of his second band ‘Azra’ was also named after sevdalinka ‘Kraj tanana šadrvana’  in 1977. From 1977 to 1979 Štulić was performing with bands ‘Film’ and ‘Parni Valjak’.

The legendary trio was formed in 1979  with Boris Leiner at drums and Mišo Hrnjak at bass guitar and they released their first song called ‘Balkan’, and everything else that came after has become legendary.
