parking2New bicycle parking in the center of Sarajevo, in the street Cemalusa, is operational as of 10 days ago.

Parking at Ćemaluša Street

Members of the Giro have established cooperation with municipalities Centar and Stari Grad Sarajevo in recent years, and built cycling parking near BBI center or more specifically behind the Sarajevo Cathedral. This year, they suggested several locations for bicycle parking in the municipality Centar on carefully selected and attractive locations in the city, which would allow easier access to the city for cyclists. One of these locations was Ćemaluša Street.

Municipality of Centar decided to finance the construction, and Amina Sokolovic and Damir Margeta handed over the project solution of parking lot on behalf of the Giro.

“We choose the location of the Ćemaluša Street for several reasons. First of all, the parking is located in the city center, next to the pedestrian zone Ferhadija and it will allow safe disposal of bicycles for cyclists who will no longer have to push their bicycles between passengers on the Sarajevo’s main streets. Second, irresponsible drivers are improperly parking their motor vehicles on the sidewalk of Ćemaluša Street. This phenomenon at this location was a frequent subject of protest of citizens and publishing of their photos on the Facebook page: “My city, my safety, my responsibility,” in order to draw attention on this very irresponsible behavior, and this negative phenomenon in traffic. Because of the impassability of the sidewalks, pedestrians were often forced to walk along the road with motor vehicles. We took this problem seriously and designed a parking lot with a dual function, “said Margeta.

High Security Level

New stands are providing a high level of security against theft and vandalism. The difference between these and the “reverse – U stands” which are placed in BBI Center and the Cathedral, is the additional transverse bar between its stands, which enables much easier and safer tying of the bikes to the stand by using the appropriate locks for bikes.

“We would really like to draw the attention of cyclists who are leaving their bikes on the public places to use the “U-locks,” which are providing a high security level against theft. The reason for this is that they cannot be easily cut down as the cable locks that thieves can cut in just a few minutes using the most ordinary cutting tools. Moreover, these stand have the other, marketing function and they allow clear marking of bicycle parking, which we also did by placing the sign for bicycle parking, as well as the logo of the Municipality of Centar and Giro di Sarajevo, who implemented this project in a cooperation, “said Margeta.

He expressed the hope that this cycling parking will be on use for the cyclist in Sarajevo and will make their movement and access to the city center much easier.

Giro di Sarajevo announced a cooperation with the Municipality of Stari Grad, with which they will make another similar cycling parking lot in the next week, near Dom Armije B&H.

damir“With the implementation of these, small but specific projects, we want to draw attention of the new potential partners of our work, whether citizens’ associations, private investors, international organizations or representatives of the local authorities,” concluded Damir Margeta.
