Sarajevo Gets new Parking for Bicycles

bikeA little parking lot for bicycles is installed behind the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Sarajevo. It was initiated by the association Giro di Sarajevo. Last year one more parking like this was placed near the BBI centre.

The new parking lot is on the north-east side of the Trg fra Grge Martića across the tram station. It has four glasses and a capacity of eight parking places for bicycles.

“The location is highly frequented and under good surveillance. The parking benches offer a high level of protection of bikes from vandalism and stealing if the users have safety locks.” – was announced from Giro di Sarajevo.

The project is a cooperation between Giro di Sarajevo whose members Damir Margeta and Amina Sokolović proposed the idea and the location of the parking while the Municipality Old Town approved the project and its financing.

“We hope this is the first step in our cooperation and that other solutions for parking will be adopted soon too, and placed on the attractive locations in town. These little but serious projects are of great importance for the cyclists in Sarajevo and serve to raise awareness in citizens about the bikes being an alternative and efficient transport. We also hope to continue the cooperation with the local authorities of other municipalities and other interested levels of authority. We will try to talk with some private investors as well.” – pointed out Damir Margeta, manager of infrastructure projects in this association.

He said that, besides tracks for cyclist in traffic, the properly designed bike parking at attractive locations in town represent a basic precondition of bike traffic.

“That is why we focused our work on cooperation with the authorities of the town, to propose quality ideas like this one, all in accordance with the practice in other big European cities.” – said Margeta.
