From October 08 to November 25, Sarajevo will be a meeting place of architects, urban planners, researchers, teachers, students, and citizens through the international architectural event “d.i.a.spona: Sarajevo School of Architecture in the World,” organized by the DIASPONA Foundation in partnership with the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Sarajevo. The Month of Architecture will begin on October 08, 2026, starting at 6:00 PM with the “DIASPONA – Coming Home” exhibition, featuring the works of 87 male and female architects from around the world, former students of the Sarajevo Faculty of Architecture whose ideas and projects are spread across the globe.
“The idea stems from simple but important facts: generations of architects educated in Sarajevo continued their professional journeys across the world, building careers in different cultural, social, and professional circumstances. Their experiences today represent a valuable potential for reconnecting Sarajevo with the international architectural stage. Therefore, the project’s goal is not only to present successful professional biographies of former students. The “d.i.a.spona” tries to create a meeting place dedicated to the exchange of experience and establishing new professional and academic connections. Through this event, Sarajevo emerges as a place people once left, but also as a place to which knowledge, experience, and ideas can return,” said Hasan Ćemalović, architect, president of the DIASPONA Foundation, and the mastermind behind this project.
Railway Station as a Space for Encounter and Renewal
The exhibition will be set up at the Railway Station in Sarajevo from October 08, and the choice of the venue carries strong symbolism. This building, today a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, represents one of the most important architectural symbols of Sarajevo’s post-war modernization. Its history is simultaneously tied to the development of the architectural profession and the formation of a new generation of local experts.
Symposium Raises Questions about City Architecture
The international urban planner symposium Perspective of the City is held in cooperation with the Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Planning of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sarajevo, and will take place on October 10 at the UNITIC Business Center Amphitheater starting at 9:30 AM. The theme of the symposium, Contemporary Approaches to Urbanism – International Experiences and Local Opportunities, is an opportunity to ask better questions, understand them critically, and apply them creatively in our context.
The symposium emerges from the belief that no city can learn from personal experience, and that no international experience has value unless it is understood within the local context. Between these two poles, an environment for dialogue where international experiences become an inspiration, local knowledge and equal contribution, and conversation is the first step to any serious change.
In addition to these two events, over more than a month of gatherings, lectures, workshops, exhibitions, book and architectural work presentations, and discussions will be organized to exchange experiences and debate over new ideas.
