On Friday, Sarajevo was the city with the most polluted air in the world, according to data from the specialized website IQAir.

The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina had a pollution index of 229 at 11:40 a.m., which is considered “very unhealthy”. On the list of the most polluted cities after Sarajevo, there are Indian Delhi, Accra in Ghana, Russian Krasnoyarsk, while fifth on the list is Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, where the pollution index was 167, and this city is in the “unhealthy” category.

The Protocol and Press Service of the Sarajevo Canton announced that due to air pollution, intervention measures from the Warning episode are still in effect in the Sarajevo Canton.

“Concentrations of polluting PM10 particles, today and in the past few days, at all measurement points in Canton are above the limit values for declaring a Warning of 90 micrograms of particles per cubic meter of air,” the announcement states.

It is added that the air quality is expected to improve today in the afternoon, due to the increased northerly wind that will lead to partial cleaning of the basin parts of Sarajevo Canton.

“However, the forecasted inversion in the evening hours as well as during the following days, with a weak wind, will favor the re-accumulation of pollutants in the air, as well as daily oscillations of PM10 concentrations in the basin parts, with maximum values during the afternoon and evening hours. “Based on this weather forecast and the state of air quality, the Expert Body for Coordination and Supervision of the Implementation of the Plan of Intervention Measures in Canton Sarajevo has given a recommendation to retain the Warning episode from the Plan of Intervention Measures,” the announcement states.
