“Shameful Court Decision on Release of Genocide Suspects”

The Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide and the Movement “Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves” assessed the decision of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina to release six suspects for genocide against Bosniaks, after the fall of Srebrenica in July 1995, as shameful.

“The release of those accused of the genocide committed in Srebrenica is a finger in the eye of the victims of genocide. Despite the well-known fact that all of them were accused and convicted, when they had the opportunity to flee to Serbia, it is not enough of an argument for the judge to order them into custody,” they state.

They warn that, if the mentioned persons escape to Serbia, the responsibility for impunity rests solely with the judge who made the decision to release the accused.

On December 16, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina issued a decision rejecting the proposal of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina to order custody of the suspects Lazar Ristić, Mladen Mihajlović, Dragoja Ivanović, Predrag Ristić, Stanoja Birčaković and Milorad Birčaković.

Sreten Milošević was ordered to be detained for one month.

The suspects are the former commanders and members of the Zvornik Brigade of the Army of Republika Srpska, who are linked to the shooting and murder of nearly 800 victims of Bosniak nationality. The shootings and murders took place in the locality of Orahovac.
