Slovak Musical Biopic DUCHOŇ Coming to Sarajevo After Standing Ovation in Karlovy Vary

After earning a ten-minute standing ovation at its world premiere at the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, the Slovak biographical musical film DUCHOŇ (2025) is arriving in Sarajevo. The screening will take place on Thursday, October 9, at 20:00 at Kino Meeting Point, with free admission.

The film celebrates the life, charisma, and unforgettable voice of Karel Duchoň, often referred to as the “Czechoslovak Tom Jones.” Through his music, Duchoň became a beloved figure whose songs united generations and defined an era.

Blending timeless melodies, a nostalgic retro atmosphere, and an emotionally charged story, DUCHOŇ pays tribute to a true music legend and the spirit of a time when songs had the power to bring people together.

An interesting detail for regional audiences is the inclusion of a Slovak version of Kemal Monteno’s classic “Jedne noći u decembru,” featured in the film as a cultural bridge between Slovakia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“DUCHOň is a contemporary biographical drama with a retro charm – a film that is watched with the heart, a voice that is remembered and songs that still exude an energy that unites generations,” said the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to BiH Roman Hlobeň.

“The connection between the former Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia is not just a detail, but the heart of the story: joint music shows, festival scenes, radio charts and melodies that easily found their way to different audiences. For Sarajevo, this line of closeness is especially clear. Karol Duchoň sang the Slovak version of Kemal Monten’s timeless hit ‘A Night in December’, which is also part of this film. The film also mentions his personal connection – Duchoň’s mother was born in the former Yugoslavia. I believe that the Sarajevo audience will enjoy a powerful and emotional film story that reflects the spirit of a time, while remaining completely contemporary – and we look forward to sharing it with the audience in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

After its world premiere on July 7 at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which was accompanied by a ten-minute standing ovation, the film was also a notable success in Slovak cinemas.

The V4 Film Festival, which has a long tradition in Sarajevo and attracts a loyal audience, runs from October 8 to 11 at the Meeting Point cinema; each evening at 8:00 PM, one film from Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic is shown. Free tickets can be picked up at the cinema box office one hour before the screening.
