Slovenian Government Denounces Fake News Claiming Prime Minister Golob’s Arrest

The Office of the Government of Slovenia for Communication (UKOM) announced that an unknown author used the misleading visual background of “Slovenian News” in paid false posts about Prime Minister Robert Golob.

Since Wednesday, fake posts about Prime Minister Robert Golob have been appearing on Facebook with computerized photos and misleading text suggesting that the police are arresting him, UKOM warns.

The posts contained a link to a website that had no information about the fake event – the arrest of Golob.

The analysis revealed that the website is completely devoid of content. It was established that the page was registered in January of this year, while the owner of the web domain remained anonymous, UKOM explains.

Competent state services assess that behind these announcements is an actor whose goal is to denigrate the current government, and to introduce insecurity and instability into Slovenian society.

The government urges all social media users not to believe or share content that appears to be false or misleading.
