Millions of users of Spain’s mobile network Telefonica experienced outages today, losing access to landlines, the internet and emergency lines.

Less than a month after Spain suffered a power outage, technical problems with one of its main communications providers caused widespread disruptions.

The outages affected large regions, including Andalusia, the Basque Country and Valencia.

A company spokesman told Spanish daily newspaper El Pais that Telefonica had tried to update its network overnight, which led to a technical failure.

The landline network was reportedly the worst hit, although many users also lost access to the internet.

The 112 emergency line went down in several regions. It has since been restored in at least some parts of the country.

The communications failure followed a recent power outage across Spain, when many users lost access to both the internet and telephone, and many local emergency numbers struggled to continue operating properly even after power was restored, AA writes.
