Srebrenica Peace March from Trepca: The Youngest Participant Is a 12-Year-Old

Citizens from Trepča near Tešanj have set off on the Srebrenica Peace March for the 17th time, sending a powerful message that Srebrenica must never be forgotten or repeated. Supported by investors and the local Municipality, a group of 20 participants is marching toward Nezuk and Potočari.

Despite being just 12 years old, Daris Hodžić has been walking this 240-kilometer route since the age of seven, accompanied by 80-year-old Nisveta Ljevaković.

“I have a strong desire to go to Srebrenica, to pay tribute to the victims, and that Srebrenica never repeats again,” Daris said.

“It is not difficult for me. I don’t have a single blister on the feet,” said Nisveta Ljevaković.

Among the Peace March participants sent off from Trepča is 72-year-old Sulejman Hasanbašić.

“There are younger and older generations. I would advise them to include as much as they can, because we are already getting on in years, and they should take over this,” Sulejman said.

Nurturing a culture of remembrance is of crucial importance. Keeping the memory of the Srebrenica genocide alive through continuous local community activities should lead to a widespread condemnation of these crimes.

“Today, we are walking a path that we must pass on to younger generations—a reminder that Srebrenica must never be forgotten. If we forget, history will repeat itself,” emphasized the leader of the Peace March, Senad Hasanbašić.

Traveling through Maglaj, Zavidovići, Banovići, and Kalesija, the March participants will arrive in Nezuk on July 8, where they will join other participants from BiH and around the world.
