A 5.0-magnitude earthquake shook buildings in Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, on Thursday, sending some people fleeing into the streets, witnesses and the disaster agency AFAD told Reuters.
AFAD said the epicenter of the tremor was in the Sea of Marmara, southwest of Istanbul, along a fault line long considered a risk to the city of 16 million.
The epicenter was recorded in the northwestern province of Tekirdag at 2:55 p.m. local time (11:55 GMT).
The earthquake struck at a depth of 6.71 kilometers (4.2 miles).
Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said there were no reports of damage in Istanbul so far after the magnitude 5.0 earthquake.
