Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard attended the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the genocide committed in Srebrenica to pay tribute to the victims and survivors, according to a statement from the Embassy of Sweden in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
During her speech at the commemoration, Minister Malmer Stenergard stated that “thirty years after the horrific genocide, we understand that peace is precious and must never be taken for granted.”
She added that peace is not merely the absence of conflict.
“It is the presence of justice, equality, and mutual respect. The work on identifying the remaining victims, ensuring zero tolerance toward genocide denial, and bringing perpetrators to justice continues,” she emphasized.
Minister Malmer Stenergard also met on July 10th with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of BiH, Elmedin Konakovic. She highlighted Sweden‘s consistent support for preserving the memory of the genocide in Srebrenica. They also discussed the current political situation in the country. The minister reiterated the importance of Sweden‘s and the European Union‘s (EU) strong presence and engagement in BiH, expressing serious concern over developments in the Republika Srpska (RS).
“The territorial integrity, sovereignty, and constitutional order of BiH must be respected,” concluded Malmer Stenergard.
