More than 40 percent of Americans have heard of a conspiracy theory that singer Taylor Swift is part of a secret government project to help President Biden win re-election, according to a survey by Monmouth University released on Sunday.
The survey emphasizes that many of those who believe in the conspiracy theory also think that the results of the 2020 election were rigged.
About 46 percent of Americans have heard of the conspiracy theory, and 18 percent of them actually believe it, according to the survey. Of those who believe it, 71 percent lean towards or vote for Republicans, and 83 percent are likely to support former President Donald Trump in the upcoming elections.
Conspiracy Theory?
Moreover, about 73 percent of those who believe in the conspiracy theory also believe that the results of the previous United States (U.S.) presidential elections were rigged, the survey reveals.
“A conspiracy theory about an alleged psychological operation involving Taylor Swift has spread among a significant number of Trump supporters,” said Patrick Murray, director of an independent public opinion research institute at the university.
”Even a large number of those who had not heard of the theory before our survey find it convincing.”
The survey also reveals that 68 percent of Americans support the idea of Taylor Swift promoting voting in the upcoming election.
Democrats are more supportive of this idea: as many as 88 percent of Democrats surveyed say they appreciate her calls to vote, and about 42 percent of Republicans agree.
Swift has recently made headlines not only for her appearance at the Super Bowl and winning Grammys but also for conspiracy theories suggesting that the popular singer is part of a psychological operation conducted by the Department of Defense, which the Pentagon has denied.
Both major parties in the U.S. political scene seem interested in the enormous influence she enjoys among a large part of American voters.
Biden’s campaign definitely wants her support (she endorsed President Biden in 2020 as well), reportedly even considering sending Biden to one of the locations where she holds concerts as part of her Eras tour.
Meanwhile, Trump publicly boasts of signing a law that makes it easier for musicians – including Swift – to earn money from online streaming of their music.
In a Sunday post on his Truth Social network, Trump said Biden “hasn’t done anything for Taylor and never will.”, Forbes writes.
