Yesterday, the 31st anniversary of the death of 12 babies at the Clinical Center in Banja Luka due to lack of oxygen was marked by a memorial service, lighting of candles, and laying flowers on the monument of 12 babies at the New Banja Luka cemetery.
Among other, flowers were laid by representatives of the Government of the Republika Srpska (RS), National Assembly of RS (NARS), representatives of the City of Banja Luka, as well as family members and numerous other citizens.
The decision of the United Nations (UN) Security Council in May and June 1992 banned international flights, including those transporting oxygen bottles from Belgrade to Banja Luka, which caused the death of 12 newborn babies in incubators.
May 22nd is considered the date of commemoration of this event, because on that day in 1992, due to lack of oxygen, the first of 12 babies died, and the others died by June 19th of that year.
