The presentation of the results from the training needs assessment visit under the project “Ensuring Sustainable Penitentiary Actions in managing rehabilitation of violent extremist prisoners in Bosnia and Herzegovina (ESPA-VEP)” was held on 18 November, 2022 in Sarajevo.

It featured the main findings and recommendations included in the assessment report, following the visit that took place in September 2022. The participants highlighted that only professional, confident and well-trained correctional staff is the prerequisite for successful prevention of radicalisation within the prison environment and successful rehabilitation and resocialisation of released violent extremist prisoners (VEPs). They also discussed the mapping of institutional actions needed to improve the legislative and institutional framework in order to build sustainable training provision coordination mechanisms at all three administrative levels and harmonised training curriculum for prison practitioners managing VEPs.

The event brought together representatives from the Ministries of Justice of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Federation BiH and Republika Srpska, the BiH Ministry of Security, as well as representatives of the six penitentiary establishments.

This activity was organized within the project “Ensuring Sustainable Penitentiary Actions in managing rehabilitation of violent extremist prisoners in Bosnia and Herzegovina (ESPA-VEP)“, which is funded under the Council of Europe Action Plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina 2022-2025.
