The Deputy PM of Serbia met with the newly elected President of Iran

Yesterday, on the second day of his official visit to Tehran, the Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, Aleksandar Vulin, met with the new President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Vulin, as an envoy of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, is in Tehran, where he attended the inauguration of the newly elected president the previous day.

In a statement from the Government of Serbia, it was stated that Vulin and Pezeskian agreed that the relations between the two countries are based on mutual respect and understanding and that there are opportunities for the development of cooperation in various fields.

Vulin said that the two countries have a sincere friendship, and that Serbia is grateful to Iran for not recognizing Kosovo’s independence.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia also met with the Speaker of the Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. According to the announcement of the Government of Serbia, Vulin said during that meeting that it is important to improve cooperation between “free countries”.

Vulin is under sanctions from the United States (U.S.), among other things, because of his ties to Russia.

Since 2021, Serbia has been strengthening cooperation with Iran, despite the fact that it is a country under European Union (EU) sanctions, with whose foreign and security policy it is obliged to harmonize as a candidate country for membership in the European bloc.

Official Belgrade is counting on Tehran’s support regarding Kosovo, whose independence it does not recognize, RSE writes.
