12948357_1752642641639079_1190079978_oThe Mechanism, which is the successor of the Hague Tribunal, today opened its first online exhibition entitled “A look through the open door of the archive”.

The goal of this exhibition is to enable the general public to access the archives of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which are now under the jurisdiction of the Mechanism, to put them in the context and understand their value.

This exhibition contains a variety of interesting items that illustrate the diversity of the content of archives. Among these are photos of objects that were used as evidence in the court, drawings that were drawn by witnesses as well as a clip from one of the first instance judgment which entered the historical annals.

This exhibition, which is available on the website of the Mechanism, is intended to provide an interactive experience for visitors. Each object contains a detailed description and links to a database where other related writings can be found.

This exhibition represents an opportunity to reflect on the many aspects that these writings have: they document the judicial process while describing the specific events that are part of a wider context, at the same time. These archives also help to display all the complexity of the events that took place in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.
