The Future Is Bright for Cryptocurrency Enthusiasts in Europe

There is a growing sentiment across Europe that it is positioning itself as one of the most prepared regions for the future of cryptocurrency. It has one of the most clear crypto regulatory environments, a rising level of institutional investment in crypto-based products and sees some of the highest adoption of crypto as an option for consumer spending. Enthusiasts of digital assets in Europe expect a strong future.

Europe is well known as having one of the most forward-thinking regulatory environments in the world in many different sectors; it seems that those keeping score can add cryptocurrency and digital assets to that list. While far from complete, Europe has progressed further than many other regions in codifying and regulating how exactly cryptocurrency can be used as part of its economy. It doesn’t matter if you are a consumer looking to spend it, an investor looking to add it to your portfolio or a business interested in developing applications powered by it; Europe is throwing its hat in the ring as a good place to do all of those things.

The cryptocurrency market in Europe is one that increasingly sees benefits for financial institutions, retailers, consumers and other industry stakeholders. Cryptocurrency enthusiasts in the region make use of trading platforms that let them check the live price of Dogecoin and other coins directly affected by changes in the region. From the introduction of electronic stock market products that allow investors to gain exposure to cryptocurrencies easily, to a stronger regulatory framework and an increasing level of crypto spending by consumers, the crypto future in Europe is looking brighter every day.

Let’s look a little closer at the different elements that are building Europe’s cryptocurrency future.

MiCA Heralds Greater Regulatory Certainty

A hugely important thing that is happening for cryptocurrency in Europe is the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. This regulation is now fully in place and provides a unified framework of regulatory rules for cryptocurrency operations within the EU. From 2023, the old patchwork framework of regulatory rules for cryptocurrencies in the EU was replaced by MiCA, and industry stakeholders are benefiting greatly.

One of the most important things that MiCA does is provide a much clearer set of rules for cryptocurrency around things like:

  • Requirements for licenses.
  • How consumer protections should be handled.
  • What sort of operational standards are in place.
  • The risk management expectations.
  • Market transparency.
  • How stablecoin issuance should occur.

This regulatory certainty has made it far easier for businesses to make long-term planning decisions about cryptocurrencies, without needing to guess or hope how regulations would pan out. It has also provided companies much more confidence in being able to invest in crypto in the region, knowing that there are stable rules and regulations in place for the market’s operation.

On the side of consumers, MiCA has provided them with more assurance that they will be treated fairly and can invest in and trade with cryptocurrency in a manner that is as safe, if more risky, as more traditional financial markets.

Investigating Increased Institutional Investment

The crypto market, globally, is experiencing a period of increased investment from institutional capital. This means that asset managers, investment firms, banks and other traditional financial institutions are beginning to engage more readily with cryptocurrency. As they do so, they are giving tacit acceptance that they consider the cryptocurrency market to be part of the broader financial landscape.

Perhaps one of the best examples of increased institutional investment can be seen in the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, where exchange-traded products (ETPs) that link with Dogecoin have become available. These ETPs are backed by DOGE tokens, and allow investors to gain exposure to the crypto without needing to engage with any of the normal trappings of cryptocurrency like wallets and the blockchain.

The listing of ETPs like this is perhaps the biggest indication that cryptocurrency has well and truly made its way into the traditional global financial market. Many institutional investors are choosing to gain exposure to crypto as a high-risk, high-yield portfolio diversification option, and other investors are following suit.

Every Spending of Cryptocurrency On The Rise

While cryptocurrency is often talked about in its role as an investment option and for how it is traded, it was originally intended as a currency to be spent. While the dream of a decentralized financial system might not be quite on track, spending of cryptocurrency on a regular basis is rising in Europe.

Businesses, especially digital ones, are increasingly accepting crypto payments for their products and services, and many payment providers are building crypto options into their portals. As support for digital currencies in payment gateways, mobile apps and debit cards increases, consumers are increasingly able to use crypto to purchase things like:

  • Digital subscriptions.
  • Travel.
  • Entertainment products.
  • Luxury goods and experiences.
  • Shopping.
  • Hospitality services.

We don’t want to oversell it; cryptocurrencies are nowhere near replacing the Euro, but they are on the rise as an option.

Final Thoughts

The future of cryptocurrency in Europe seems more certain by the day. Thanks to an increasing level of institutional investment, increased consumer spending and much greater regulatory certainty. Investors, consumers and businesses in Europe can use cryptocurrency with confidence.
