Israeli authorities have arrested one of their citizens on suspicion of involvement in an assassination plot that Tel Aviv accuses Iran of targeting several high-ranking officials, including Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israeli security services say they have arrested a businessman who was smuggled into Iran, where he allegedly attended two meetings discussing the assassination of Netanyahu.

Yoav Gallant, the defense minister, and Ronen Bar, the head of the Shin Bet intelligence agency, were also named as targets.

“An Israeli citizen entered Iran smuggled across the border hidden in the cab of a truck. He met with Iranian intelligence agents and they asked him to carry out activities for Iran on Israeli soil, including assassination,” the IDF said in a statement.

The unnamed Israeli citizen, who had ties to Turkey, allegedly demanded an advance of $1 million before taking any action, the statement added.

Israel claims that Iran asked the businessman to carry out the assassinations in revenge for the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, on Iranian soil in July.

He was arrested in August 2024, before a series of attacks that killed more than 30 and wounded thousands of people across Lebanon and parts of Syria on Tuesday and Wednesday, Klix.ba writes.
