The Number of Employed in FBiH Keeps Declining

The latest data of the Tax Administration of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) show that in just one month, in August, compared to July, the number of employed decreased by more than three thousand workers.

The number of employees according to the residence of employees on August 31st, 2025, is 541.921. Compared to the published data on the number of employees on July 31st, 2025, when it amounted to 545.018, the number of employees is lower by 3.097, as announced by the FBiH Tax Administration.

Lower fiscal turnover as well

Also, as stated by the FBiH Tax Administration, a decrease in fiscal turnover was recorded.

The recorded turnover in August 2025 is lower compared to August 2024 by 157.839.207.23 BAM.

Admir Cavalic, economic expert and representative of the opposition Party for BiH in the House of Representatives of FBiH, also commented on everything. He referred to the fact that the Tax Administration of FBiH stated that the biggest drop in the number of employed was recorded in education.

“Since cliches are being used in the public about the influence of education on the number of employed, it is important to state that these are expected, seasonal influences. The cantons did not suddenly decide in 2025 to temporarily dismiss employees in education. Such practice has unfortunately been present for decades. Those who work in education know that well. So it is, at the very least comical to cite the education system as the cause of unemployment in FBiH. It is enough to look at the data for August last year – 545.192 employed in 2024 (3.271 fewer compared to this year). A note that in August 2024, there were 5.216 more people employed compared to August 2023. Similarly, some explanations suggest that our people are going abroad, and therefore, the number of employees is falling. As with education, this trend has unfortunately been present for a couple of years, decades back. In the last four years, workers have been leaving, but employment has been rising. In 2025, workers are leaving, but the number of employed is falling,” he stated.

It should be mentioned that at the end of last year, the number of employees according to the residence of employees amounted to 551.452, while at the end of last month it was 541.921. This means that since the beginning of the year, the number of employees has decreased by 9.531 workers.

Now it is one year since the so-called non-working Sunday was introduced in FBiH, and from the beginning of this year, the minimum wage is 1.000 BAM. On a 1.700 gross wage, contributions have so far been reduced by 90 BAM, Cavalic previously explained.
