The Number of Thefts in Supermarkets in BiH is on the rise

Thefts in supermarkets are nothing new. Despite the fact that security measures in retail stores have never been higher, the number of thefts is also on the rise. We checked why this is so.

Sensors, buzzers, and surveillance cameras do not represent any obstacle for thieves to use this illegal action.

Most often, it is about people who are prone to theft and who are repeat offenders. All profiles of society are engaged in theft, including minors, pensioners, and all other layers of society.

A video of a theft in one of Sarajevo’s supermarkets, which took place on February 13th of this year, was published on the Internet.

The cameras recorded a man and a woman stealing food products from the shelves, mainly fish products such as Rio Mare and others.

The figures clearly show a worryingly large number of thefts in Canton Sarajevo (CS). Thus, since the beginning of 2023, 715 cases have been registered in this Canton that are treated as the criminal offense of “theft”.

Of that number, 199 occurred in retail stores (markets, supermarkets, supermarkets…).

274 thefts were committed on the street, 96 in public city transport vehicles and 24 thefts were registered at gas stations. The rest of the thefts are treated as “other”.

It is important to note that a large number of such crimes were not even reported to the police, so it is clear that this number is much higher than the registered number.

Security agencies warn that (not necessarily) the people who steal are those for who would you never say they do it.

“We recently had a case in a facility in the Stup neighborhood secured by our agency, where a well-dressed middle-aged lady stole pates that cost about 2 BAM. That tells you everything,” said the Flek agency’s security guard from Sarajevo.

Although this is no justification, the numerous thefts that take place in supermarkets are only a reflection of the financial situation in which the majority of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) citizens live.

Therefore, it should not be surprising that this kind of practice is becoming more frequent. The problem is that it is reflected in the inefficiency of the legal system and the increasing rate of inflation that has affected the whole world, including our country, Klix.ba reports.
