Vrelo Bune has officially been included on the list of the world’s most significant karst springs.
With this recognition, Vrelo Bune has become part of the 100 most important sites of global geoheritage promoted by the International Union of Geological Sciences. This site was nominated by Ferid Skopljak from the Federal Institute for Geology with the aim of giving geoheritage a prominent place in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s (BiH) tourism offer, and it became part of the mentioned list in December last year.
Vrelo Bune is located 12 kilometers southeast of Mostar and is known as one of the most powerful springs in Europe, with a flow rate that can reach up to 380 cubic meters per second. This spring not only attracts visitors due to its beauty but also plays a crucial role in the region’s ecosystem, providing a habitat for numerous endemic species of plants and animals.
Near Vrelo Bune lies an old dervish tekke from the 16th century, which further enriches the cultural heritage of this area. This unique combination of natural beauty and historical landmarks makes Vrelo Bune a popular destination for tourists from around the world.
The inclusion of Vrelo Bune on this prestigious list represents a significant step toward preserving and promoting the natural wealth of BiH. It is expected that this recognition will increase interest in exploring this region, encourage the development of sustainable tourism, and contribute to the economic development of the local community, Klix.ba writes.
